It’s a tough thing to admit, but the “Compact-SUV” segment is growing. All the big Asian brands and American brands have their own variants and most of them are fairly run of the mill, almost sharing DNA and never really creating anything exciting. But they are cheap, agile and good in the City. This makes them increasingly popular.
Now the German’s are coming to the rescue and frankly, this is a “Compact-SUV” worth getting excited about.
Introducing the Audi Q2. Audi first revealed the Q2 late last year but now they have taken the covers off it completely and revealed engines and prices.
The all-new Audi Q2 will be offered initially in two model lines: the 1.4 TFSI design for $41,100* and the 2.0 TDI quattro sport for $47,900*. Both models share the sporty seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission as standard.
The entry level 1.4 TFSI model features fuel-saving Cylinder-on-Demand technology that shuts down two of the four cylinders under light throttle loads. It develops 110kW/250Nm and returns frugal fuel efficiency of 5.3 litres per 100km. The 2.0 TDI engine develops 110kW/340Nm, with fuel economy of 5.0 litres per 100km. The 2.0 TDI is offered exclusively with quattro all-wheel drive. A 2.0 TFSI quattro model with 140kW/320Nm will be offered in the second half of 2017.
Even at this price point, the all-new Q2 will be equipped with a generous array of standard features including Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), MMI Navigation, bluetooth and smartphone interface, voice control and parking system plus with rear view camera. Automatic air-conditioning with dual-zone climate control, leather-appointed seats, auto-dimming interior mirror, a contrasting C-pillar blade and either 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels, depending on the model, round out the key highlights. The 2.0 TDI quattro also gains an electric tailgate, sport seats and Audi side assist as standard equipment.
The Q2 Launch Edition in Quantum Grey comes equipped with the 1.4 TFSI engine, for $49,900*. In addition to the same standard equipment featured in the design model line, the Launch Edition features S line exterior styling and black contrasting elements to give these special vehicles even more distinctive appeal, as well as a suite of driver assistance systems including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, and active lane and side assist.
The all-new Q2 has been awarded a five-star Euro NCAP rating, with an ANCAP rating pending.
“The highly anticipated all-new Audi Q2 will establish itself as a unique offering in the premium compact SUV segment. It will open up the Audi brand to a new range of young and young-at-heart buyers,” said Andrew Doyle, Managing Director of Audi Australia.
“This new model will exceed customer expectations of how an Audi should look, thanks to its progressive polygonal design language, and what it should offer, thanks to a suite of infotainment and connectivity technologies. We are very pleased to be launching this game-changing vehicle to Australia in such a competitive package.”
The Q2 sports the intuitive Multi Media Interface (MMI), an infotainment and navigation system, which can be operated by a rotary/push-button control and a touchpad (on MMI Navigation plus) on the central control element. In addition, the system can be conveniently controlled by voice, known as natural language operation, and the integrated MMI search. Audi Connect will be rolled out across the Q2 range as standard equipment, including Google Earth and Google Search functionality, along with a Wi-Fi hotspot that enables surfing and streaming with mobile devices.
But it’s not all glitzy and glam. The Q2 offers a large luggage compartment with 405 litres of capacity (or up to 1,050 litres of capacity with rear seats folded down).
Q2 design 1.4 TFSI S tronic 110kW $41,100
Q2 sport 2.0 TDI quattro S tronic 110kW $47,900
The Q2 goes on sale from the 24th of February and I for one am really looking forward to it.
