Infiniti today announced the beginnings of their new High-Performance Line, with the first model based of the popular Q60 coupe.
Dubbed the “Project Black S”, it’s the first venture into a high-performance road-going vehicle from the Formula One Renault-Nissan alliance. Whilst it’s still all in the very early development stages, Infiniti have hinted at a few features.
Pinching parts from their Formula One team, the “Project Black S” is expected to feature an ERS, or ‘energy recovery system’, similar to the KERS system in a F1 car or a Ferrari LaFerrari. The idea is to harvest energy, then deploy the recovered electric power to boost engine power and torque.
The result is instant, lag-free acceleration. It will be the first widely available vehicle with this sort of system. It will make it the ultimate hybrid vehicle.
Speaking about the concept, Roland Krueger, President of Infiniti had this to say; “INFINITI is the premium car manufacturer within the Renault-Nissan Alliance, and a technical partner to the Renault Sport Formula One Team, so it is natural that we come together to explore the possibility of bringing innovative high-performance hybrid technology to our customers. INFINITI has constantly led the way in making innovative new powertrain technology available, and we’re extremely excited by the potential of Project Black S.”
So with a car from the luxury arm of Nissan and an engine from the RenaultSport Formula One Sport team, it will be quick, but not as quick as a Mercedes – which probably explains the only image released so far.
Full details will be released on March 6th when the “Project Black S” is unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show.
