It’s not everyday one of the best car makers in the world reveal a new car, let alone two. But Wednesday the 22nd of March was no ordinary day in Sydney’s Darling Island.
Trivett and Aston Martin invited us down to Doltone House to show off their latest masterpieces, the V8 Vantage S Red Bull Racing Edition and the brand new V12 Vanquish S. This was the first time Australia has seen these cars in the flesh, and they are both something special.
But the aim of the day was to showcase the limited edition Vantage, a car made possible thanks to a deal struck with Formula One’s Red Bull Racing team in Melbourne at the 2016 Australian Grand Prix.
Aston Martin President and CEO, Dr. Andy Palmer was in attendance, and laid out Aston’s 5 year plan. After a tumultuous 100 years of building cars, including a number of years where they lost money and even went bankrupt, the 007 car of choice is only looking forward, not back.
Along with the release of the new Vanquish and Vantage, the British company plan to introduce a number of new vehicles to their lineup, including an SUV and a mid-engined hypercar.
But the showpiece was the 4.7 Litre V8 Vantage S Red Bull Racing Edition. One of only 17 being shipped to Australia (and possibly the only one available today), the limited edition Vantage carries all the key components any Aston fan could desire.
Thanks to their technical partnership with Red Bull Racing, the Vantage S has a number of extra pieces of kit not available on the standard Vantage. Aside from the obvious red lip and the RBR embroidery on the head rests, the car features some other unique pieces.
Carbon fibre is littered everywhere, including the front splitter, diffuser, side strakes and grill surround. The signature Marina Blue matte paint job you see on Daniel Ricciardo’s F1 car is standard here too, although you can opt for gloss Tungsten Silver if you dare to be different.
You also get bright yellow brake calipers to further match the F1 car.
Inside, there’s more Carbon Fibre, including trim inlays. A full leather steering wheel matches with the leather seats and the 6-speed h-pattern manual gearbox finishes the job off nicely.
We sat down and spoke with Patrik Nilsson, President of Aston Martin Lagonda Asia-Pacific, who shed some light on what is sure to become an iconic partnership.
“We announced it here in Australia, in Melbourne… it was the day before the first practice session,” Mr Nilsson said. “It’s a technical partnership and one of the first fruits is what you see behind me, but it extends to much much much more than that. The hyper car, Valkyrie – which is coming in 2019 – is one of the pinnacle results of this collaboration.”
It’s far form a car with just a sticker on it. It has been signed off by the Red Bull Racing drivers themselves, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen.
“It’s a beautiful thing to be back here, one year later, with a product celebrating this collaboration, with the signature of Daniel on it, or Max. Uh yeah, it’s a really cool thing.”
Everyone at Aston Martin is excited about this car.
